Transitioning from Violence to Liberation: Yoga in Chicago’s West-Side

Marshawn is teaching yoga on Chicago’s West-side after serving 18 years in prison. Marshawn, who was convicted of murder in the first degree, used his time behind bars to grow and transform. Marshawn completed his GED while in prison and took several years of college classes. Marshawn first sought out yoga while in prison because of the pain and injuries he had sustained from his powerlifting. Later, he became a co instructor and taught yoga at the Illinois River Correctional Center near Canton, Illinois.

After his release, he finished an entrepreneurial training program and the Chicago Yoga Center’s yoga teacher training. He opened the first Yoga studio in Chicago’s Austin area last year, ACT Yoga. There he continues teaching and inspiring others.
