Determining the Ideal Yoga Class for Beginners

My 85-year old grandmother called me a few weeks ago to ask for advice on taking a yoga course. She is not one of the senior yoga practitioners. In fact, she has never done any type of yoga and recently tore her right meniscus. I recommended that she look for a Chair Yoga class, Restorative Yoga class, or a Class designed specifically for her age group. After we hung up I hoped she’d listen to my advice, as she knew that she would be in way over her head if she tried an beginner yoga class or all-levels .

It’s important to pick the right class for you. My grandmother is a good example, but this applies to all of us. Although a college student who is flexible and athletic could get away with taking a physically demanding class for their first yoga class doesn’t mean that they should. Let’s be honest, it can be daunting to start something new.

There are many styles of yoga and teachers to choose from, so there is a class that will suit every student. If you’re not sure where to start, or if you want to switch up your current practice, here are some popular yoga styles that can be used for your first class.
